Subject: 4/30/92 YEM & Tweezer Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 11:25:42 -0800 (PST) From: Charles Dirksen 4/30/92 Barrymore Theater, Madison, WI Every once in awhile you encounter a version of a jamming tune that you hadn't heard before that you just can't believe no one had ordered you to hear. The opening segment of this Tweezer is really punchy and lively (faster than usual.. this tape is a tad sped up!), and Trey is clearly having a great time with the lyrics. About 2 and a half minutes into it, Bruce Hampton apparently steps out on stage and blows a trombone (Trey says "Birthday Boy" and Hampton takes a little solo.. is this really Hampton? it frankly sounds like it could be Cameron McKenney, but on trombone!). After "Look who's in the freezer" Trey yells BRUCE HAMPTON and then begins viciously screaming and CACKLING along with Mike!!! This is easily one of the most amusing open segments of Tweezer ... At about 4:11 the jam segment begins. Within less than a minute Trey has locked into a catchy theme that he repeats a bit before taking off in typical Rock Star Trey fashion. Mike's accompaniment is excellent! Page and Fish pretty much rage, too.. damn. What a great old version! Well.. around 7 minutes, the jam appears to lose direction rather dramatically, but they soon bring things back. Lots of sustaining from Trey in the upper octaves of his Languedoc.. wow!! They all lock into this somewhat hypnotic, repetitive groove for about a minute between 8-9mins (it isn't very melodious, however). Climactic soloing from Trey around 9:30.. and the Note that begins the dying out of the Tweezer theme ending at 9:48 or so. Typical ending for a Tweezer that began VERY UNIQUELY.. total time: 11:10. I'm pretty sure, however, that this version is a tad sped up.. pitch ain't right. So I'm guessing total time is closer to 11:30. Please don't ask me for this show, because I no longer have the tapes.. two cents charlie
