05/17/99 Flynn Theatre, Burlington, VT

Anticipation was high for this hometown show for Trey. There were plenty
of fans outside the small theatre looking for their miracle. At my seat I
saw a friend of mine and he relayed a rumor he had heard just a few
minutes earlier. Someone said that Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead was
seen at the 3 Needs bar downtown. Unfortunately, if he was in town he
didn't make it on stage. However, after Trey came out for his Acoustic
set, he did mention that over 35 musicians would play tonight. Of course
that got the crowd thinking...
He opened with Farmhouse and right away you could tell he was very relaxed
and was enjoying being home. The highlight for me was the Acoustic version
of Runaway Jim. Much better played than the version he did at Higher
Ground at the beginning of the tour. He ended the set with Billy Breathes
on a baby grand piano. Then he got up and introduced some musicians that
would perform while he took a break. Dave Grippo and the Frederick Tuttle
Middle School jazz band came out. They did 3 songs and opened with Glenn
Miller's In The Mood. The crowd went nuts. Not only were these kids in
Jr. High but they were fantastic! I would pay money just to see them
perform. They followed with a swing tune called Jumpin' at the Woodside
and finished their mini set with James Brown's I Feel Good (with Trey
playing along). By the end of the song every musician had a huge smile on
their face and over half of them got to solo. The electric set was filled
with anticipation of what they were going to play and who would be playing
with them. Trey opened up the Jimi Hendrix's Wind Cries Mary which
gave me goosebumps. He kept the set pretty much standard material that he
had been playing (Ooh Child, I Can See Clearly Now, Aqui Como Alla, First
Tube, Come On Baby, Lets Go Downtown). The second to last song of the
set he brought out Dave Grippo and members of the South Burlington High
School Jazz Band and did Then Came You and Last Tube, with all eight
members getting solo time. Then they said thank you and left. It seemed
like 5 minutes when Trey came back out followed by Russ and Tony and...
gulp... Dave Grippo, Page, Mike and Jon! You couldn't hear yourself
think! Everyone went nuts! They started Further On Up The Road and Dave
left. Then he closed out this VERY special night with a blistering
rendition of Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child (slight return). After the lights
came back on I felt like I floated out into the Burlington night. A
beautiful way to end a Monday, considering that I received my Summer Tour
mail order hours earlier!
